Trying to keep up with AI lately can feel a bit like drinking from a firehose. With new tools popping up daily and headlines predicting everything from massive productivity gains to job loss, it can be hard to figure out what’s actually useful and what’s just hype. In a recent conversation with AI strategist Ian Barkin, we talked about how professionals can cut through the noise and start using AI in ways that genuinely make work easier and more impactful.
One of the first things Ian emphasizes is understanding what people actually mean when they say “AI.” The term covers a wide range of tools. Conversational AI systems can generate responses, ideas, and content, while more advanced AI agents can take action and move tasks forward in a workflow. But as Ian points out, even the most advanced tools still rely on strong human judgment. AI can suggest options or speed up tasks, but deciding what’s accurate, useful, or appropriate is still very much a human job.
Ian shared how AI is changing the kinds of skills that matter most at work. Rather than replacing people, AI tends to amplify the work we already do. Developers can use AI to speed up coding, support teams can handle routine questions faster, and product teams can prototype ideas in minutes. But the real value still comes from human strengths like judgment, communication, empathy, and deep expertise in a particular field.
Another big idea Ian shares is that many organizations rush into AI without first understanding their workflows. Adding a new tool to a messy process rarely solves the real problem. Instead, Ian recommends starting with the basics:
When workflows are clear, AI becomes far more effective.
The biggest takeaway? Stop chasing every new AI tool and focus on learning one platform well. When you understand how AI fits into your workflow, it becomes far more powerful than constantly jumping between tools. Ian also encouraged us to stay curious and keep experimenting because the real advantage comes from combining AI’s capabilities with human judgment and experience.
