We used to google things and trust the first answer that popped up. Now it takes hours of digging to gather enough data to make a decision you feel half way decent about. Navigating information overload is becoming more cumbersome than ever before and critical thinking is the only way forward. Luckily for us, Becki Saltzman shared her wisdom with us on ways to supercharge our decision making and some ways we can think better.
Becki emphasized a handy framework called RRV: reliability, relevance, and validity. She highlighted the importance of crediting the information by checking its source’s, making sure its relevant to your current decision-making, and validating the claims. In a world where doctored images and manipulated information can derail our thinking, this helps keep you focused on what really matters for critical analysis.
Becki suggested using phrases like “how might” or “how could” when making collaborative decisions or if you’re new to a team or industry. She shared her Good Thinking stool and really broke down the difference between critical, creative and strategic thinking. She also challenged us to tap into our senses, even smell, when thinking things through and we discussed the idea of underthinking (not just overthinking!) and how to navigate both when you find yourself doing either. Critical thinking is a skill that’s constantly being challenged and I hope you get just as many great nuggets of advice from this conversation as I did!
