I want to be better at handling challenging days with a smile. Who doesn’t need a little pick-me-up when the world feels heavy? Jay brought some refreshing new ideas that everyone can benefit from.
Jay introduced us to Jill Bolte Taylor’s concept of “the 90-second rule.” Did you know that when something happens that stirs up those strong feelings, it takes about 90 seconds for your body to process the chemical reaction? Next time a situation has you seeing red or feeling low, remember that the wave will soon pass but 90 seconds feels like a long time when you’re experiencing that. Use this knowledge to your advantage and give yourself that moment to breathe.
One of my favorite takeaways is Jay’s new tool “Hey, wait.” This little phrase can be transform your conversations and help you regulate your emotions, especially when someone’s words hit you the wrong way. It’s like pressing pause, giving you the space to process and respond thoughtfully without making things too awkward for the other person. It’s not about confronting; it’s about connection.
I also loved Jay’s advice on taking “visceral snapshots.” When things are going well, take a mental picture of that feeling. Notice everything: your surroundings, the emotions, even the physical sensations. These snapshots become a resource, something you can revisit to bring a bit of joy to future moments. Jay left us with a bit of homework to try sneaking in her “hey wait” tool some time throughout the week and tell us about it on LinkedIn. We’d love to hear from you and hope you can join us for coffee again some time soon!
