Have you ever felt like being seen at work is a game you’re not even sure you want to play? You’re not alone! This week, Lorraine K. Lee—fresh off her bestselling book “Unforgettable Presence”—joined us to talk about simple ways to show up and be noticed (even if just the thought makes you want to hide under your desk).
We started by debunking the myth that visibility means being the loudest person in the Zoom room. Presence isn’t just about in-person charisma or commanding the meeting. It’s also about where and how you show up: are you active on Slack, sharing helpful notes, or asking smart questions in an email? All that is building your presence, not just speaking up for the sake of speaking.
Lorraine emphasized the importance of energy management—knowing your limits. You don’t have to be “on” all the time. Maybe you shine with a written update or a well-crafted LinkedIn post. Find the platforms and moments that fit you, not the other way around.
Don’t assume your hard work is being noticed. This was a lesson Lorraine learned the hard way: share what you’re working on, make your goals known, and find those “skip level” moments—aka meeting with your boss’s boss (with your manager in the loop, of course!). Even sending a follow-up email to confirm those conversations happened helps you keep things on track and keeps your ambitions on their radar.
Remember, showing up at work is less about being everywhere and more about being intentional. Start small—ask a better question in that next small talk moment or use Lorraine’s frameworks to help you show up well on camera or build influence at work.
