Networking in 2024 can feel like trying to find somewhere in a city that keeps changing the street names. So many of us are still working remotely, attending meetings on Zoom, toggling between in-person events and online communities, trying to figure out how to build relationships that actually mean something, which is why I love our weekly coffee chats! And I love even more when I get to talk with you directly. This week’s Ask Me Anything turned into advice on everything from networking to book recommendations.
We talked about the power of showing up live, virtually, or in person. A recorded podcast is great, but nothing beats the real-time connection of a live event where you can ask questions and chime in. When you’re in a live chat it’s easy to spot someone who shares your interests or drops a comment that sparks a follow-up. These moments can lead to new friends, collaborators, or mentors.
When it comes to networking IRL, we talked about quality over quantity. In my early days, I’d show up everywhere, but now I pick one or two events a month and give myself a simple challenge, like meeting two new people and actually getting their contact info. It’s so much less overwhelming, and those conversations usually go deeper.
If you feel like everyone on LinkedIn is just pitching or selling, you’re not alone. Building real connections takes patience (and a willingness to kiss a few frogs). Reach out in a genuine way, share interesting things you’ve learned, and look for people who do the same. Eventually, your “tribe” shows up.
Bonus: Don’t forget the homework! Pick one new thing to try this week, maybe post about a topic you care about, reach out to someone you admire, or try a “distraction-free” walk after dinner.
