Can I make a confession? Updating my LinkedIn profile is one of those tasks that’s incredibly easy to push to the bottom of the to-do list. It’s not urgent. It’s not flashy. And somehow, there’s always something else that feels more important. But every time I finally sit down and spend an hour refreshing it, I’m reminded just how valuable it is. Whether someone is thinking about hiring you, inviting you to speak, referring you to a client, or simply deciding whether to connect, chances are they’re checking out your LinkedIn profile first. The good news? You don’t need a complete overhaul to make a big difference.
Your LinkedIn profile is so much more than an online resume. It’s often the first conversation someone has with your personal brand before they ever meet you. That’s why it’s worth making sure your profile reflects who you are today, not who you were three years ago. Start with the basics: a current photo, a banner that supports your brand, and a headline that goes beyond your job title. Then take a fresh look at your About section. If someone outside your industry read it, would they immediately understand what you do and how you help people? Clear always beats clever.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people listing responsibilities instead of results. Your experience section should tell the story of what you’ve accomplished, not just what your job description says. Whenever you can, include numbers, measurable outcomes, awards, certifications, or projects you’re proud of. And don’t overlook recommendations and endorsements; they’re like social proof that helps reinforce what you’re already saying about yourself. Think about what you want someone to remember after they visit your profile, then make sure those accomplishments are front and center.
You don’t have to update everything at once. I like to think of LinkedIn as a little bit of professional spring cleaning. A couple of times a year, block off an hour to review your profile, remove anything that’s outdated, add recent wins, fix any typos, and make sure your contact information is current. While you’re there, naturally weave in keywords related to the work you want to attract so it’s easier for the right people to find you. These aren’t huge changes, but together they can have a real impact.
Most people wait until they’re actively looking for a new job or opportunity before updating their LinkedIn profile. I’d encourage you to flip that mindset. The best opportunities often show up when you least expect them, and having an up-to-date profile means you’re ready when they do. So consider this your friendly reminder to carve out a little time this week, give your profile some love, and make sure it’s telling the story you want people to hear. Your future self, and the people looking for someone just like you, will be glad you did.
