Conflict at work can be tricky. Do any of these situations sound familiar? You’ve been promised a raise but you’re not getting it, you keep getting talked over in meetings, you’re frustrated with the way your boss is shooting down new ideas. Lisa Gates, a fellow LinkedIn Learning Instructor, joined us to break down a few common conflicts and how to navigate them better next time.
Conflict usually starts in our own heads, something like “did they really mean that?” or maybe a million scenarios of “if they say this, I’ll do that”. Lisa cautioned us to use open ended questions and curiosity as our first step when we start these hard conversations. Not only can it help you understand but it also helps buy you some time to form a better response.
I loved the scripts Lisa shared for us to use when it feels like we’re not being heard at work, a simple “I was talking and I wanted to finish my point” when you’re interrupted during a meeting or even “I know you’re excited about this project but let me finish this thought” when someone talks over you. She gave us a few pointers on deescalating a conversation and how to approach the “promised raise” conversation. If you’ve been putting off a hard conversation at work I hope this helps you feel more prepared!
