AI is everywhere these days—the headlines, your LinkedIn feed, maybe even your morning routine. But let’s be honest: for all the hype, a lot of us are still figuring out what this technology actually means for our day-to-day lives and our work. That’s why I brought in Doug Rose, who’s been teaching AI and change leadership to Fortune 500 companies and folks like us long before AI became a buzzword.
Doug explained how there are really two “flavors” of AI at play. There’s predictive AI—which has been quietly working behind the scenes for years, helping businesses forecast demand and make eerily accurate recommendations. And then there’s generative AI, the kind you might already be using at home for things like party planning or coming up with Mother’s Day gifts. According to Doug, generative AI is just starting to wiggle its way into our work lives, and companies are scrambling to keep up.
Doug’s top tip? Know what you’re working with. Really take the time to understand what AI is—and what it’s not. Before you consider handing your job over to a chatbot, remember: it’s basically a giant pattern-matching machine, not a person or a trusted expert. Be especially careful with company data. That “should I put this into ChatGPT?” question is very real in the workplace.
Doug also believes jobs with a strong “human touch”—like plumbers, stylists, or any hands-on problem solvers—aren’t going anywhere, even if knowledge work shifts. Bottom line: the more you understand the tools you’re using, the better you’ll be at navigating what’s coming next—no panic necessary.
