Public speaking is one of those things that makes even the bravest among us sweat through our shirts! If the words “presentation skills” makes you want to crawl under your desk, you’re in good company. This week’s coffee crew was buzzing with confessions, questions, and debate about why it’s so tough and what to do about it.
The most common advice? “Practice, practice, practice!” But I couldn’t help but share a controversial take: You don’t need to memorize your speech word-for-word. In fact, I think it makes us more anxious! Instead, write yourself an outline, focus on the key ideas, and let yourself fill in the details on the fly. Spoiler: Nobody knows if you say “awesome” instead of “super.”
Set yourself up for success with some pre-game prep. Pick your outfit early (and try it on—a must! No one wants to feel like a stuffed sausage on stage), plan your route, and avoid leaving decisions until the morning of. Less last-minute scrambling = more confidence.
And here’s my favorite “aha.” Whether you’re in person or online, pay attention to how fast your talk. Most of us talk WAY too fast when we’re nervous. It’s totally normal (hello, adrenaline!), but the audience needs time to catch up. Slow down, throw in a pause or two, and don’t be afraid to repeat your main points. I love studying great public speakers to get an idea of how quickly they talk.
A last minute request to speak, what do you do if you have to wing it last minute? Be honest, let folks know you’re subbing in or didn’t have much notice. Keep it short, sweet, and you’ll have everyone rooting for you. The worst thing to do in these situations is ramble. Got a big presentation coming up? Try these tips, and let me know how it goes!
