AI isn’t slowing down. And for a lot of smart, capable professionals, that’s both exciting and… exhausting. If you’ve been AI-curious but slightly overwhelmed, unsure which tools matter, how to use them well, or worry you’re already behind, you’re not alone. The good news? You don’t need to become “technical.” You need to become intentional.
1. Rethink what AI actually is
One of the biggest mistakes Ray sees is treating AI like it’s here to replace entire jobs overnight. That framing creates fear, and fear shuts down experimentation. A more useful way to think about it? AI is leverage. It amplifies what you already know how to do. Instead of manually combing through research, editing every silence out of a video, or formatting the same type of report for the hundredth time, AI can handle the repetitive lift. That frees you up for the parts that actually require judgment: decision-making, strategy, creativity.
2. Start small
If you want AI to meaningfully change your workflow, don’t dabble; experiment. One trick Ray suggested, pick one task you do all the time: reports, decks, research briefs, or content drafts. Then try doing it with a new tool for a week. Let the AI handle first-pass edits. This is what he calls a “burn the boats” mindset, committing long enough to push past the awkward learning phase. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s discovering what’s possible when you stop defaulting to your old process.
3. Double down on the skills AI can’t replace
As tools get better, the value shifts. It moves toward judgment. Orchestration. Knowing which tool to use and when. Knowing when to ignore the output. Connecting ideas across systems. AI can generate options, it can’t decide which one aligns with your strategy. It can draft content. It can’t build trust. The professionals who thrive won’t be the ones who know every tool; they’ll be the ones who think clearly, experiment often, and integrate technology into a bigger vision.
AI isn’t a shiny toy. It’s a set of tools. And like any powerful toolset, it rewards curiosity over fear. Start with one workflow. Run a small experiment. Reflect on what changed. Then do it again. You don’t need to become an AI expert. You need to become someone who knows how to think alongside it.
