Updating your LinkedIn profile can’t be a todo on your list that you cross off forever. It should constantly evolve as you do. When you keep it updated, it signals that you’re active, engaged, and growing. Even small tweaks, refreshing your headline, adding a certification, updating a role, can increase how often you show up in search and how seriously people take you. A quarterly check-in is usually all it takes to make sure your latest wins and offers are front and center.
Your “About” section is where your profile shifts from resume to real person. This is your space to share what you care about, what you’re known for, and what makes you different. It should sound like you, clear, confident, and human. And one small but powerful detail? Make it easy for someone to contact you. Don’t assume they’ll hunt for your email. Put it right there so opportunities don’t slip through the cracks.
Then there’s your visual presence. Your banner is prime real estate. It’s the first impression before anyone reads a single word. A strong visual, whether that’s a bold statement, a clean design, or something that reflects your expertise, immediately reinforces what you do. When done well, it makes your profile feel intentional and invites people in.
Recommendations and volunteer experience add dimension. They show that your impact goes beyond bullet points. Recommendations build credibility because they let other people tell the story of what it’s like to work with you. Volunteer work shows your values and the communities you care about. Together, they round out your profile in a way that makes you memorable.
If you’re considering a pivot, or even quietly thinking about one, your profile should reflect where you’re headed, not just where you’ve been. LinkedIn isn’t just a record of your past. It’s a tool for shaping your future. A few thoughtful updates can shift how people experience you, spark new conversations, and open doors you didn’t even realize were there.
