If Q4 always seems to sneak up on you, you’re not alone. One minute it’s September, and the next you’re juggling Halloween plans, holiday travel, year-end deadlines, family commitments, and approximately 47 things you forgot were on your calendar. Instead of waiting for October to roll around and hoping you’ll magically find more time, use September as your planning runway. A little preparation now can make the final three months of the year feel much more manageable.
Q4 is probably not the time to create a list of 12 ambitious goals and convince yourself you’ll somehow get them all done. Pick two or three priorities that genuinely matter and be honest about what they require. A goal like doing 10 push-ups every morning is very different from learning a brand-new AI tool. One can start immediately; the other may require research, testing, and time to figure out whether it actually belongs in your workflow. Before adding something to your Q4 list, ask yourself: Is this realistic during the busiest time of the year? Does it require setup or learning? Can I measure progress by December? And will it still matter on January 1? If the answer is no, it might be a January goal, and that’s okay.
If one of your Q4 goals involves a new tool, process, habit, or project, September is the perfect time to do your homework. Watch the tutorials. Read the reviews. Ask questions. Test the basics. This is especially important with AI tools, where there can be a big difference between “this looks cool” and “this actually solves a problem I have.” Before adopting something new, think about what you want it to do, what information it needs access to, and what you’re comfortable sharing. You don’t have to try every new tool just because everyone is talking about it. Start with the problem you want to solve, then find the simplest solution that can help.
Q4 brings plenty of decisions with it, and they aren’t all big ones. What are we eating tonight? What should I read? When am I going to work out? By the time you’ve made dozens of little choices, your brain is tired—and suddenly even the smallest decision feels like a lot. So, make some of those decisions in September. Pick a few go-to meals. Choose the books or courses you want to tackle. Decide what your top work priorities will be. Create routines that remove some of the guesswork. The goal isn’t to make your life rigid. It’s to save your mental energy for the decisions that actually deserve it.
Q4 doesn’t have to be a three-month scramble. When you use September to choose your priorities, learn what you need to learn, and make a few decisions ahead of time, you’re giving yourself something incredibly valuable: breathing room. And remember, not every goal needs to be finished by December 31. Sometimes the win is testing an idea, learning a new skill, or figuring out what deserves your attention next year. Do the thinking now, build a little structure around what matters, and let your future self enjoy a slightly less chaotic Q4.
