#132 | Mini-Workshop: Tips For Job Searching

Job searching can be frustrating, which is why I thought we could come together and have a conversation about the struggles and swap secrets. Some prep on the front end can save you hours of filling out job applications and crossing your fingers. In today’s world getting your resume in front of a real life human is always the first hurdle. Writing your resume in simple fonts, with 1 inch margins and keywords is key for getting AI to send your resume on to human eyes.

There was lots of input from the chat on software’s to use like Jobscan to help make sure your resume is ready to go before you hit “submit”. We also discussed tailoring your resume for cold intros vs warm intros and how if you have a foot in you may want to showcase your personality but for cold intros (meaning no one at the company knows you personally) a less cutesy and more keyword dense resume is best.

The job search conversation couldn’t be had without me diving into how to leverage LinkedIn. I have an entire free mini-course on LinkedIn Learning about how to get your profile in tip top shape and I stand by the fact that most of my career opportunities have come from this space online! (Liz and several other CWK members shared their own stories to back it!) At the bare minimum make sure your headshot is up to date and professional and add some of that fun personality into the about section to hook recruiters when they land on your profile.

You know I love to leverage my network on LinkedIn but when I’m on the hunt for a new opportunity or even if I’m hiring I am HUGE on sharing that with the world. Even if it’s with my aunt’s cousin’s dog’s groomer, if it comes up organically I’ll let them know what I’m looking for or what I’m trying to accomplish. You never know when someone has a connection that might change your career trajectory! It’s happened to me too many times to think it’s a coincidence!

The job search might seem daunting, but with these strategies, it can be a productive and even enjoyable journey. Be sure to craft a resume that grabs attention, optimize your LinkedIn for maximum visibility, leverage your network to tap into unadvertised jobs, and keep connecting and learning on LinkedIn. The career adventure you’ve been yearning for could be just a step away. Keep pushing, keep growing, and happy job hunting!
