There’s nothing worse than pitching an idea to your team only for it to be followed by crickets (or worse, naysayers!) How do we create a strong team that’s ready to listen and implement new ideas? Deidre has been teaching leaders how to ignite engagement and communicate with influence for 30+ years. The first step in her FEEL model is getting unstuck and facing your fears. She’s not wasting anytime pushing us right out of our comfort zone and onto better things!
Deirdre shared how we most likely will have naysayers when we’re pitching a new idea or wanting to change something, as humans we resist that uncomfortableness! She said the worst thing you can do is try to get them to be quiet and sit down, that will only fuel their fire and their influence. Invite them into the conversation, become curious about why they feel the way they do.
The piece of advice I loved most was “be on the look for nonverbal clusters” clusters, not cues. Meaning if there is more than one person with a negative nonverbal it might be worth examining your thought or idea a bit before charging on. She shared some great tips for talking with your boss or what to do if you’re an introvert trying to communicate with influence. Be sure to check out the list of resources she shared below and take her FEEL FIRST TEST on her website.
