Public speaking changed the trajectory of my career. I got the chance to pitch my idea on Shark Tank in 2015 and it really opened my eyes to how impactful this skill can be as an entrepreneur. Since then I’ve gone on to do keynote speaking and have found myself pitching ideas to some pretty cool teams at my marketing company, Bright Ideas Only. Here’s a few things I’ve learned over a decade of public speaking.
First, make sure the morning of is as simple as possible. Whether it’s planning your outfit or figuring out parking, the day of should almost feel like you’re on auto pilot. Don’t let things like tech or wardrobe malfunctions get you anymore stressed than you might already feel.
The biggest mistake I see while speaking is talking too fast. I’ve done it myself! I always recommend studying other speakers that you enjoy listening to and filming yourself before the big day to see what you can mimic or what things you may be doing that distracts the audience.
The final tip, the one most people avoid, study yourself after! Ask someone at the event to film you or set up your own phone so that you can go back and review what went right and what you wish would have been different. This step is uncomfortable, I’m not going to lie to you, but think of it as if you’re an athlete watching game tape, take notes and decide what can be done better in the future. Whether it’s keynote speaking or pitching a new idea to your manager you’ll be glad you refined this skill next time you find yourself in front of a group of eyeballs!
