A CEO, constant learner, and ice tea drinker from Kentucky who has all the credentials that one would ever want! Cassie is a powerhouse being named to Forbes 30 Under 30 and Billboard 30 Under 30 while starting her company, Crowd Surf, based on her love of social media, connection and fandom.
I love her founder story where she talks about sneaking backstage to meet her biggest idols. Gutsy!
What exactly is working in social media? What do you actually do?
The general public may think that those working in social media are simply content creators but it’s much more than that. Cassie doesn’t generally create posts or content but instead advises on strategy. She gives her clients advice on what to post, when to post, how long the video or caption needs to be, and shaping an over-arching strategy. She also spends a large portion of her time exploring & teaching people about new trends – like TikTok and Facetune Video!
We all know that we need to create the content but the larger question is what do we post?! I’m constantly battling the internal dialogue of: “Does anyone care?” or “Does anyone even want to learn about my insights?”
Cassie discussed that even her A-List clients face this same imposter syndrome. While it will get easier over time, Cassie shares some quick tips on how she conquers it and how she advises her clients to battle it!
A quick rule of thumb Cassie uses: if your family wants to know about it, then there is a good chance that others will also!
Working 9-5 in social media is hard but having to worry about your own social media on top of that seems impossible. Cassie reveals how she stays inspired when it’s an industry she works in constantly. A great lesson for anyone trying to carve out time for themselves!
Cassie’s Tip: There are so many platforms out there. If you are new and feeling overwhelmed, choose one and focus on learning and growing it like a pyramid. Start with a basic foundation and knowledge and work your way up. Deciding on which platform to choose is important based on your goals and what you’re trying to achieve. According to Cassie, LinkedIn and Instagram are probably the easiest to start with!
Do we all need content calendars?! I for one, cannot stand them and cannot make myself use one!
Cassie explained that while you can use a content calendar, it’s more about posting a certain amount of content per week. Don’t get too stressed about missing a day, just post the next day. The key is to acknowledge the existence of social media and be consistent.
While one shouldn’t need to be too stringent on their posting, some sort of organization tool to list to-dos and goals are important. There are so many tools out there, Post-It notes or a simple app like Google Keep, like Cassie uses, can help keep you organized.
Pure & Simple: Not posting enough. It’s better to post something than not posting at all. It’s better to try than not try at all. Don’t over think it. Remember you can always delete or archive posts later on if you’re not happy with them. If you want to post something but you’re just not sure of it grab a friend to review it. This is especially true if you want to weigh in on a controversial topic. Having someone to review the post before you hit publish can save you from sticky situations!
When it comes to social media are you a lurker at the party or an attendee?
Social media isn’t just about what you post, but it’s also the interaction that you have with the people in the platform: liking, commenting, sharing, and learning from one another. Gaining true connections is much more powerful than gaining passive followers.
