2023 is YOUR year. It’s time for you to make the magic happen! In this episode of Coffee with Kim we’re breaking down how to.
Join me as I share S.M.A.R.T. Goals (and why you need them!) A check in system so you don’t rely on willpower (it fades!) Plus, templates for finding, asking for, and securing an accountability partner. Let’s set goals, create check in’s & evaluate ourselves so we can be set up for maximum success in the new year – and beyond!
Around this time of year, we hear a lot of talk about “goals” and “resolutions”. They real key to success is knowing the difference between the two and planning correctly.
By definition, resolutions are a firm decision to do or not do something. For example, giving up smoking, drinking, or sugar, or adding in workouts, hugs, or calls with family. Where as a goal is the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. One could aim for a promotion, or to make new friends. In other words, resolutions are absolute and goals are flexible.
Now that you know the difference, are you a goals person, a resolutions person, or somewhere in the middle?
If you’re into resolutions you’ll want to set them and track them. I use the app Streaks, for this! I love it because it’s easy to use, feels like a game, and is my favorite price, free.99!
Are goals more your thing? Set, track, and tweak them using the SMART structure. That is, make sure they’re specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. I used to set up my goals like this but I remixed them to be specific, measurable, accountable, realistic, and include timed check-ins instead.
Being held ‘accountable’ give you the kick in the butt I need when my will to work isn’t enough. ‘Realistic’ goals help you to go after what you can in this season. For example, if you know you’re moving, it might not be realistic to set a goal of going to the gym four times a week.
To be honest, when I didn’t reach my time-based goals, I felt like a failure. Having ‘timed check-ins’ instead allowed space for adjusted goals and the opportunity to track my progress.
Here are some red flags to avoid when you’re goal setting:
Getting stuck on ‘How’ – If your goal is to make more money, don’t forfeit an opportunity to do so because it didn’t come the way you thought it would.
Not being able to measure progress – Tracking your movement is key to knowing if you’re getting closer or further away from your goals. You should be able to answer if you’ve reached your milestones.
Not specifying how you will stay accountable – Be sure to clarify if you’ll be checking in via calls, texts, or emails. This avoids confusion and miscommunication. (P.S. The CWK community is a great way to find accountability!)
Setting BHAGs – So, you have Big Hairy Audacious Goals? That’s great! But the first step to getting there is setting smaller goals – milestones – that are accessible to you now.
Not sharing dates – Your accountability must know your goal dates so they can help keep you on track.
