Celebrating our wins at work isn’t always easy but it’s necessary to accelerate our career. We’ve all caught ourselves downplaying accomplishments or brushing off compliments and my specialty: “okay now that that’s over, what’s next?!” I forget to celebrate how far I’ve come or what I’ve accomplished and it’s often my friends (or mom!) who slows me down and helps me acknowledge my wins.
Jessica Chen and I chatted about the importance of recognizing and communicating our success at work! As a former TV news reporter Jessica is a pro at distilling information and sharing it with enthusiasm. But as you can imagine in the TV space, she often felt that the louder personalities were noticed most. She didn’t believe that had to be the case and decided to share all she learned in her book Smart Not Loud to help folks like her, who are a little more reserved, to still get the recognition and compensation they deserve!
One of my favorite takeaways: the acronym ACCT to advocate for yourself at work. This framework is a game-changer for managing workload while maintaining executive presence. She also shared a great media tip to help when you’re asked a question you don’t know. Look down, look up and look them in the eye, answer with a pointed response. It’s okay to say “Great question, I don’t know but I will get back to you”
If you haven’t pre-ordered Jessica’s book yet, run don’t walk! It’s packed with these actionable tips and she’s even hosting special events for those who pre-order. Those communication workshops are going to be packed with value and I can’t wait to see you in the crowd with me continuing to learn with Jessica about accelerating our career in a SMART way.
