Work-life balance can feel like a juggling act, especially when the pressure is on. I had a fun chat with Jan Rutherford about being a self-reliant leader, and we’ve got some juicy takeaways for you.
First up, managing up: Get in sync with your boss’s priorities and challenges. It’s all about making their job—and yours—a whole lot easier. Think of your boss as your main client. Help them out, and you’ll see your workday become smoother.
Next, clear communication is key: Jan dropped an awesome quote from Katherine Hanaway, “Expectations are the breeding ground of future resentments.” Always make sure everyone gets the ‘why’ behind tasks. Clear expectations can dodge misunderstandings and spark some fresh ideas.
Lastly, self-awareness and feedback: Know your quirks and how they affect others. Jan suggested asking your colleagues for advice instead of formal feedback. It’s less intimidating and can be super helpful. Plus, following up on their advice can make your team tighter and stronger.
Our chat was such a great reminder that being a self-reliant leader isn’t about going solo—it’s about creating a supportive vibe where everyone wins. Reflect on your values, communicate clearly, and help your team find their groove.
