I’m so excited to bring you another mini workshop this week! We’re talking all things career capital as we get ready for the launch of my new course. I’ll be sharing what career capital is and why it matters, how to tell the story of who you are and what you do, fast-tracking your knowledge, finding opportunities to improve, and one of my favorite topics, networking made easy! Don’t worry I have you covered with the notes! Just share your email at sendmenotes.com and I’ll send them straight to your inbox.
Did you know someone googled you in the past month? I know, I know it makes you feel a little awkward. Like, “Why me?’ I’m not famous. What are they looking for?” They probably googled you for one of two reasons, something personal, like remembering your birthday, or something professional, like learning more about you before a meeting. Either way, we’re in what I call the Digital Era of Decision Making. Your online presence helps people make decisions about you – and, no, we’re not going back – that’s exactly why your career capital is so important! (Tweet this!)
You’re probably asking, ‘Ok, Kim. So, what is career capital?’
It’s your reputation made of three ingredients:
People are saying no to you before they know you because they can’t tell how great you are based on your online presence. Investing in these areas will make all the difference!
Recently I googled myself and the third search result was my LinkedIn profile. When I googled Richard Branson, his came in at number four. I followed suit with Sarah Blakely and her LinkedIn was the fifth result. If LinkedIn is coming up before accomplishments like guest hosting Shark Tank, going to space or reaching billionaire status, I’d say it’s pretty important to keep up to date!
Control your narrative – and sell people on your awesomeness – by one, optimizing your profile – I share my top 5 tips at helpmylinkedin.com. And two, turning on LinkedIn’s new feature, creator mode – visit turnoncreatormode.com for a how to.
Who’s your human Google? Who can help you find a resource or make a connection instantly?
The CWK community is that for me. I get to meet all sorts of interesting people here every week!
Keep growing your list with my easy networking method, the ‘Save and Spray’. Simply save all the interesting people you were introduced to throughout the week via podcasts, tutorials, meetings, posts, etc and pick a time to send them all connection requests. This method saves time, holds you accountable, and, because you’re sending a personal message, helps you stand out. New connections almost always accept my request, reply to my comment, and even ask how they can further help! It’s a win-win without even trying.
Usually we look to give knowledge, which is great, but eventually our own cup will run dry if we don’t fill it back up. Boost your career capital, by prioritizing investing in your own knowledge. You’ll gain leverage, level up, stay ahead of the curve, and in turn be in a position to help others do the same.
The good and bad news about career capital is that you’re always building it! You’re either investing in yourself and community to get better, or you’re not and you end up on the island with Blockbuster, the fax machine, and the other folks that thought this doesn’t apply to them.
Building career capital isn’t about reaching a final point, it’s about going the distance.
Here are two tips to make your efforts easier along the way:
