You can have a great idea and still lose the room in the first 30 seconds. Not because it’s wrong, but because it’s unclear. That’s exactly what came up in my conversation with Charlie O’Donnell, and honestly, it made me rethink how often we overcomplicate things when we’re trying to impress.
Charlie, who is a highly sought-after coach to top venture capitalists, has seen thousands of pitches. And his take is refreshingly simple. The ideas that win aren’t the most complex, they’re the most clear. He kept coming back to this idea that your message needs to be easy to understand, a little emotional, and simple enough that someone else could repeat it. Because if they can’t share it, it’s not going anywhere.
We also talked a lot about storytelling, but not the polished, buttoned-up version most people think of. More like, can you make someone care about the problem you’re solving? Can you paint a picture that feels real? Charlie shared how often people jump straight into product, when what actually pulls people in is the problem and the human side of it. It’s less “here’s what we built” and more “here’s why this matters.”
Another big takeaway was stop waiting for perfect. Charlie is a huge believer in getting something out into the world when it’s “good enough,” learning from what happens next, and pivoting quickly. He’s also using AI in a really interesting way and shared his strategies and new tool with us. Think reviewing your pitches, spotting your blindspots during meetings, and getting a clearer picture of what actually landed versus what you thought landed.
If there’s one thing you take from this conversation, it’s this: clarity beats complexity, stories beat features, and momentum beats perfection. These tips aren’t just for founders or people raising money; they’re for anyone trying to get an idea across and actually have it land. So if you’ve been stuck tweaking, editing, or overthinking, consider this your nudge to simplify, say the thing, and see what happens.
