In today’s coffee meeting, we debunked myths and zeroed in on the heart of true leadership. We recognized two primary types – authoritarian and influential leadership. While the former may seem appealing in the short run, it’s influential leadership that truly stands the test of time. It’s not about exerting power or control, it’s about inspiring, motivating, and making a positive impact in people’s lives. But how does one go about that?
We discussed the importance of leading with positivity, which can be as simple as smiling more often. The atmosphere at work can be significantly transformed by being patient, maintaining a positive persona, and always assuming the best intentions. A tip to cement your positive influence in meetings: be the first one to speak up, ask good questions, and encourage others to do the same. Being that person who people enjoy working with will naturally make you a leader they look up to.
Lastly, we stressed on proactively solving obstacles and thinking like an owner. This is where you leverage your influence to create solutions, not just identify problems. For instance, you can strategically request for a promotion by showing your value and achievements, not just asking for it. Pay attention to the leaders around you and learn from their actions. Remember, influential leadership is about self-empowerment and empowering others, and that, my friends, is really the secret to landing your next promotion.
