Delegating tasks can sometimes feel like a monumental challenge, but trust me, it doesn’t have to be! During our recent coffee chat, we tackled a few things about delegating that can make your life a whole lot easier.
Ever felt like your brain is about to explode with all the tasks you need to get done? Get them out of your head and onto paper (I like the ole fashion paper nothing digital). Make sure to include the small stuff like text your friend back, pick up your dry cleaning, etc. Once it’s all laid out, star the tasks only you can do and identify the rest for delegation.
When delegating, clear communication is your best friend. Be crystal clear with deadlines and reasons behind them. It’s also super helpful to provide a check in system so that they don’t complete the whole task incorrectly. And don’t forget to let your team know how best to reach you with questions. Something like “You can text me anytime but 4-6 when I’ll be driving”.
Lastly, don’t assume someone can’t help just because they’re not a direct report. It’s okay to ask colleagues, household members, or even your boss for help. Transparency is key! If you’ve taken on too much, speak up before drowning in work. And think about exchanging tasks or skills with others. Look at Upwork or 99designs for anything virtual or for in-person help, consider services like TaskRabbit or hiring a local college student.
Delegating might seem scary, especially if you have a bit of a control issue (don’t we all?), but giving up some control can free up your time and help others grow. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember these tips and start delegating like a pro!
