You only get one chance to make a first impression. As we move into a digital first world, more often that first impression is happening online and not in person. Someone may come across your name, your website or your social media account before you get the chance to meet them face to face.

How First Impressions Have Changed (05:58)
For 50 some odd years you’d have to make sure your shirt was tucked in, your hair was slicked and you gave a firm handshake when you met someone. Why? To make a good first impression of course!
But, in the last 10, 5, and especially 2 years, first impressions have happened digitally.
Your online presence is telling everything other’s need to know about you before they ever meet you in person. Yes, my friend, you’re being googled. But don’t go through the hassle of optimizing Google, use LinkedIn instead.
Why LinkedIn Matters (14:00)
Good news! LinkedIn and Google are BFF’s. Linkedin is crawled by Google meaning 9 times out of 10 your profile shows up on page one of results.
I tested this theory with my own name and it worked. Then I Googled Richard Branson, who by the way went to space, and there was LinkedIn again, not news about his travels through the stars. Lastly, I searched for Sara Blakely, the world’s first self-made female billionaire, and – spoiler alert – her LinkedIn also came up on the first page!

Your LinkedIn profile could be the difference between you getting the interview, meeting, or call. Don’t give anyone the chance to “no” you before they “know” you. Use these tips to supercharge your profile.
How Quickly Are First Impressions Made (25:00)
I geek out on info about human interactions and relationships. Some of my favorite books on the topic are Cues by Vanessa Van Edwards, Captivate by Vanessa Van Edwards, and Blink by Malcom Gladwell.
Here are some interesting facts:
- Digital first impressions are made in 3-5 seconds
- In person first impressions are made in 7 seconds
- 72% of people admit to “researching” people before meeting them
- 61% of people believe they can instantly spot a phony
