Are any of the following on your 2023 Wish List: Attract more opportunities at work? Make more money with less stress? Gain visibility at work without “bragging”? If so, this Coffee With Kim episode featuring Diana Chan is especially for you! As a LinkedIn Top Voice in 2022 for Job Search & Careers, she has coached and trained thousands of clients globally from entry level to C-level executives on how to stand out at work, get hired on your own terms, plus, how to earn more and ask for it. Get ready for all her gems on how to level up your career in the new year!
Diana is a certified pro at helping people stand out! Her Linkedin Learning courses and YouTube channel are packed with advice on how to. Having also recruited for tons of competitive roles, she says employers are looking for these three things:
1 Performance – Play up your achievements and show how you are a high performer
2 Progression – Share how you’ve grown in your career, whether that’s taking on more responsibilities, entering leadership roles, etc.
3 Promotion – Highlight any promotions especially if you’ve had a fast track career
Diana says these three indicate top talent. But, don’t just track what you’ve done, track how you did it differently and specific ways you have contributed.
Selling or promoting yourself can feel… icky, for lack of better words. If you can relate, you’re not alone. Studies show 70% of people experience imposter syndrome!
Diana says you can get comfortable with promoting yourself by:
1 Recognizing Your Value – Identify your accomplishments, strengths, and qualities.
2 Believe in Your Value – Give yourself a pat on the back for the great work you’ve done.
3 Voicing Your Value – Don’t wait until the end of year meeting to present your value, drop breadcrumbs through the year of work you are proud of.
“You don’t want to talk about everything you’ve done, that’s overwhelming. Instead, have a theme and focus on the top three unique selling points that will make you stand out.”
We covered interview and promotion prep but I was curious to know Diana’s advice when asking for a raise. Should we ask for a number increase or a percent increase? Is there a best time of the year to ask? What proof should we bring to justify our ask? She shared we should do our research on current salary stats – of course – but also on how to level up in your role.
“In most companies there are different levels for positions. When you approach asking for a raise, its not always about going directly for a higher number, it’s about jumping to the next level which will automatically improve your salary.”
Diana added that a great way to increase market value, have points to negotiate with, and secure that “level up” is with a strong personal brand.
