Negotiating has a tendency to raise our heart rate. We show up to our end of year review knowing we need to ask for a raise and ready to “fight for it” but this conversation with Kwame might shift your perspective and give you some confidence for your next negotiation. Kwame taught us that we may be walking into negotiations all wrong. His compassionate curiosity model starts out with an effort to lower that emotional tension we all feel by asking questions and listening with genuine curiosity about why you might be feeling some push back, it takes the “me vs them” out of the negotiation and turns the conflict into a conversation.
Kwame shared a lot of really great tips for common situations we might run into when negotiating! Have you ever felt like you’re being bombarded with questions and can’t seem to get a word in edge wise? Kwame taught us that we might want to take notes, slow down our responses and ask open ended questions and this will naturally allow for the conversation to slow. He shared that brain blanking when confronted is a normal response and remembering that we are human and practicing this skill will lower that emotion when it happens.
My favorite thing about the conversation was his homework to us to watch some reality TV and notice how people are really missing the mark on body language and compassionate curiosity and how we can do things better in our next conversation. (no shade, Love is Blind but we’re all tuning in to see what NOT to do!) I hope this conversation gives you just a bit more confidence the next time you’re negotiating your salary or pitching your idea to a new client!
