Burnout is sneaky! And if you’re anything like me you might see the signs coming but ignore them anyway. Do any of these feelings sound familiar? You’re always exhausted, it feels like you can never get on top of things, or maybe you just can’t get any satisfaction out of your work anymore. In our recent chat with Daisy Auger-Dominguez, we dug into what burn out really is and tips on how to manage it before it’s too late.
As a Chief People Officer Daisy has seen burnout across industries and generations. One of Daisy’s ideas is the “energy level check.” Before jumping into a meeting or task, pause and rate your energy on a scale from 1 to 5. This simple exercise helps you understand where you stand emotionally and physically. It’ll help you asses what’s fueling you at work and what’s weighing you down.
I loved Daisy’s tip of rubbing your thumb and forefinger together when you feel stressed. This tiny movement works wonders in keeping you grounded during tough times and can be done out of sight (like under your desk) when things start to get heated or you’re making a big ask.
Daisy shared her personal journey of why this work is so meaningful to her and her experience with taking a sabbatical. From meditation techniques to brain dumps on paper, the key is in finding the method that feels right for you. There’s no one size fits all.
As a leader in your organization or someone just trying to navigate the end-of-year chaos, I hope these tips help. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and as Daisy so perfectly said, “A burn out leader leads to a burnt out team”. Let’s make burnout a thing of the past and keep ourselves “lit up” instead!
