Resumes have not completely gone the way of fax machines and Blockbuster just yet. So, today I’m teaching you how to perfect your resume. I’ll be sharing how to avoid resume pitfalls and what skills to highlight. Plus, how to get past the newest application gatekeeper.

What Is An ATS & Why Does It Matter?
There’s a new gatekeeper in town called ATS. Have you heard of it – the Applicant Tracking System? In the digital forward world we live in, even our resumes are being processed by computers. You won’t get your resume in front of humans eyes until it passes the ATS test!
5 Ways To Perfect Your Resume:
- Simple Fonts – Always use universal fonts like Arial, Helvetica, or Times New Roman as they are easy for a computer to read.
- Use 1 in margins on all sides – AI is usually focused to read in one area. Information included outside of the margins may get cut off.
- Traditional Headlines – Include headlines like ‘work experience’, ‘schools’, or ‘internships’. We love creativity but the ATS favors simple text.
- Job Title in Heading – Always share your job titles in the experience section.
- Include Keywords – Keywords are key! They get you past the ATS and signal to the human eye that you are familiar with the industry.
Does Experience Expire?
Nope. Experience does not expire in my opinion. Experience in industries like sales or HR have evergreen skillsets and techniques. The exception is fast changing industries and tools like social media and tech. You can’t be a Facebook expert if the last time you worked with it was 2009. It goes without saying that so much has changed since then!
